Chilterns League 2017 - round 1
Written by Andrew Farrow

The first round of the Chilterns League took place at the weekend; for those unfamiliar with this competition every event has no faster than times which if exceeded result in a swimmer being disqualified making it great for slightly less experienced swimmers or swimmers who don't normally swim a particular stroke.  But it can also be a huge challenge for team selection, even more so on a night when we had two other teams in action, so apart from congratulating the team on finishing second with 8 first places, 15 second and third places and a quite magnificent 30 PBs in 50 races, chilterns 2017 rd1
we should also congratulate lead coach Lauren Wilding for her team selection. To cap a very successful night, Daniel Belsey set a new Club record for 8 year olds in the 50 free, smashing the old record by almost 2 seconds.

After 3 weekends and 14 sessions of swimming, the 2017 Herts County Championships drew to a close on Sunday with the long distance events before the noisiest session of them all; the relays!  And there was much to celebrate for Hemel. Alice Fender won the championship gold in the 800 free as well as taking silver in her age group in the 400 free with Grace Cawley winning her 5th gold medal of the competition in the 400 free setting a new age group club record in the process.  Georgia Purkis won bronze in the 400 free and Sam Gaines broke his own 400 IM age group record, breaking the 5 minute barrier in the process. Holly Robinson won bronze in both the 400 IM and 800 free, setting new age group records in both as well as smashing a 6 year old record in the 400 IM by over 7 seconds.

In the relays there were golds for the 12-13 girls medley team of Millie Anderton, Tilly Beckwith, Millie Herbert and Emily Young and the girls 14-15 free team of Izzy Anderton, Charlotte Hingston, Shona McKenna and Georgia Purkis who also took silver in the medley event. The boys open relay of Jack Christie, Joe Gillam, Josh Gaines and Jack Spence won silver in both their events, agonisingly losing out on gold by less than a second in both races in a quite fantastic finish to the competition.

Arena 2016 - rd 3

What a night in East London that was!  Half way through the competition Hemel lay joint second, 17 points behind first, but with only 18 points separating second from sixth it was nail-biting stuff.  In the end it was Hemel that held its nerve to finish a comfortable second, a place above our pre-competition seeding, and only 9 points behind first.  arena 2016 rd3
The team has improved in each of the three rounds of this year's competition, for which credit must go to the coaching team as well as the swimmers.  This round was the third fastest aggregate time posted by a Hemel team in the competition ever, beating a time set by the record-breaking 2015 team. There were four first places but the result was more a tribute to consistency with 16 second and third places. There were no fewer than 23 individual or relay lead leg PB's, a number of them significant improvements, which is a remarkable achievement coming toward the end of a hectic short-course season.  There were ten new or improved Regional QTs, one Club open record, 4 Club age group records and three Club competition records. Overall it was a huge step-up in effort with non-swimmers raising the roof in support of their team.
