Written by Andrew Farrow

The last chance national qualifier event at Guildford S.C. saw Alice Fender set a new Open Club record for the 200 free in the heats, only to break it once again in the finals.  Unfortunately for Alice she finished just 6 hundredths of a second off a national time.

Young swimmers from Hemel Hempstead Swimming Club took part in two events to raise money for BBC Children in Need.

On Tuesday during their training session, junior members had got baking and held a cake sale raising over £250. They didn’t stop there…… on Sunday over 70 members made a splash and took part in a sponsored swim. A total of 154,075 metres was swum by all the swimmers, including some of our very youngest Aquabears being just 7 years old.

Lauren Wilding, Development Coach at Hemel says “I am incredibly proud of all the swimmers and the hard work they put into both events, what an amazing achievement raising over £1,000 for a fantastic charity.”

Congratulations to the 71 Hemel swimmers who participated in the first of our collaborative Club Championships with Watford SC and swam the 400 free.  Georgia Purkis broke her own age group Club record set just last weekend by a massive 5 seconds in an epic contest with Alice Fender which Alice just edged.  There were 42 personal best times and no fewer than 23 swimmers entered the event for the first time, gaining valuable experience at this distance.

Arena 2016 - round 2
Written by Andrew Farrow
Tuesday, 15 November 2016 17:50
The Arena team showed great tenacity and fight throughout the second round of the competition at Luton, coming fifth on the night with many close finishes.  Despite a number of absences they actually swam faster than in the previous round, posting the fourth fastest time ever by a Hemel team, suggesting that there's still more to come in the last round.  Alice Fender won the 100 free, there were 17 other second and third places, 11 individual PBs and three Club age group records by Heidi Gibbens in the 100 breast and Sam Gaines in the 100 arena 2016 rd 2 2
fly and 200 IM (breaking his brother's record by 7 hundredths of a second!). Sam was also part of the boys u16 relay team along with Ashley Coombs, Jonny Farrow, Cameron Clark (in the free) and Joe Coldwell (medley) which set new Club Arena records in both their relays, breaking records previously set in 2008.  Other Club Arena records were set by Ashley, Georgia Purkis and Jack Christie.

Written by Andrew Farrow
Monday, 07 November 2016 09:47
Octobers swimmers of the month are Matthew Morley from Sealions 1 and Isabella O'Leary from Seals. Both swimmers have joined the club fairly recently and have really stood out as they have adapted to training very well. Matthew and Isabella have both put in a lot of effort and have picked up training techniques that they previously wouldn't have come across. Congratulations to both swimmers.

HHSC supports Children in Need
Written by Andrew Farrow
Thursday, 27 October 2016 15:49
HHSC are holding a sponsored swim to raise money for Children in Need on Sunday 20th November. Each swimmer will be asked to swim for 30 minutes to an hour, depending on which group they swim in, and their lengths will be counted. There will be no normal training on this night; each training group will be given an allocated time slot to come and do their swim. These times will be on the notice board together with a volunteer sheet to help count lengths!

We will also hold a bake sale on Tuesday 15th November, which we will need your cakes and biscuits for! These will need to be brought to the cafe for the start of training and we’re looking for some older swimmers to volunteer to help sell them.

2017 County Championships – qualification process
Written by Administrator
Thursday, 20 October 2016 10:47
Hemel Hempstead currently has over 60 swimmers with times within the consideration/ qualifying parameters for the different age groups at Hertfordshire County 2017 Championships next January/February. The qualifying times can be found here, and details of those swimmers who already have a consideration time can be found here (but please see below for what holding a consideration time means). The depth of swimmers within HHSC achieving consideration and/or qualifying times is great for the club in showing our strength.

The qualifying window for Counties is open until Wednesday 14th December, although we will be submitting entries a few days before then.  Hemel Hempstead’s last chance qualifying meet is the Team Luton Development meet on the 11th December, and our closing date for entries for this meet is Sunday 23rd October.  We expect swimmers to be attending to achieve necessary requirements ; this will be your last chance to advance your current times and to potentially secure any new opportunities for the 2017 Hertfordshire County Championships.

We are really pleased to announce that Septembers swimmers of the month are Mia Maslen Wollington in Aquabears and Joe Kelly in Seals. Mia swam her first open gala at Epping Forest with some great swims in all her events. This is well deserved following on from her positive attitude in training. Joe Kelly has adjusted well to moving up to a harder group. He continuously pushes himself in training and is really working hard to improve his technique. Congratulations to them both. swimmer of the month - september 2016 - boy september 2016 - girl

Arena 2016 - round 1
Written by Andrew Farrow
Monday, 10 October 2016 07:45
A very exciting, very noisy and closely fought first round of the 2016 Arena League saw positions change dramatically throughout the evening. In the end Hemel finished fifth with only 36 points separating third from eighth. Congratulations to Jack Spence who won both his individual races, and to Jack Christie who won the 100 breast in a new open Club record time. There were 14 other top three finishes, with a special mention to Alice Fender who swam the crucial first event of the evening, the 200 IM, for the first time in an Arena competition and finished third despite swimming up an age group, with a new PB and setting a new age group record; all despite the start being reset five times because of technical problems.

Congratulations to Holly Robinson who was one of the Hertfordshire team in the recent Junior Inter-Couty competition at Luton.  Herts finished third on the night behind Essex and Suffolk, and Holly set two new Club records in her individual events, breaking her own record in the 50 breast, and setting a new record in the 50 back, breaking a record last set in 2009 by almost 2 seconds and becoming the first Hemel 10 yr old girl to swim under 40 seconds long course in the event.
