The latest update to the club records database has revealed that a staggering 35 New Club Records were set during Herts County Championships and subsequent Open meets. With so many young swimmers coming through to make their mark on the record books the club is proving to be stronger than ever.
One name future swimmers will be trying to beat is that of Thushira Kumerage, who has taken no less than 8 records in the last three months. Four of these were a case of breaking his own previous records, in the 9 years’ 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 200m breaststroke and 100m butterfly. Thushi also bettered two times previously set by Immanuel Palmer in the 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke. He also improved on Kyle Holmes’ records in the 50m breaststroke and the 10 years’ 400m freestyle.
Second highest record beater in the last couple of months is Club Captain Tom Sherriff, whose phenomenal performances at Counties saw him break four club records, with two more at the Watford Easter Open. Tom defeated his own previous record in the 14 years’ 200m freestyle. In the 100m freestyle he took down Lucas Irving’s record from 2004. An even older record to fall was that of Charlie Docker set in 2003 in the 1500m freestyle. Tom broke two of Harrison Robb’s more recent records in the 200m backstroke and 100m IM, as well as Jamie Keevill’s previous best in the 200m breaststroke.
Another youngster working her way through the best times list is Megan Pirrie, who took five records at Counties. She broke her own previous best in the 10 years’ 200m butterfly and 200m IM, Alicia Barnett’s record in the 400m IM and Freya Mayhew’s in the 400m freestyle. As the first 10-year old on record to compete in the 800m freestyle, she also claims that record in a time of 11.39.98.
Victoria Fisher ran true to form, breaking two of her previous records in the 14 years’ 50m and 100m backstroke. She also added two of Katie McLaren’s times to her tally, in the 200m backstroke and 200m IM.
Kyle Holmes broke into the record book three times, bettering his own 10 years’ 200m breaststroke, as well as beating Ben Page’s record in the 10 years’ butterfly. Most impressively, on only just turning 11, his Peanuts League swim broke Ben McFarlane-Barnes’ record in the 11 years’ 50m breaststroke.
Lois Moore, broke two records: Katie McLaren’s 50m butterfly, along with Emma Jolly’s all-time best in the 800m freestyle.
Another two-time record breaker is Paige Wilding, taking Danielle Bayliss’ 11 years’ 200m backstroke time and Devon Prior’s record in the 200m IM.
Freddie Woodcock broke his own 13 years’ record in the 400m IM and Lucas Irving’s 2003 record in the 1500m freestyle.
Hannah Bagley broke Kelsey Doyle’s record in the 12 years’ 50m breaststroke with her medal winning Counties performance.
The oldest record of all to fall was Tim Hand’s 15 years’ 50m backstroke, a time of 31.83, which has stood since 1996. Sam Pigott was the one to finally better this with a time of 31.76.
Finally, Alisha Kan set a new record at the Luton Open in the 11 year girls’ 400m IM in a time of 7.07.35. She is the first 11 year-old brave enough to compete in the event – proving that she who dares wins!
