East Region BAGCATS 2008

A group of talented young swimmers from Hemel Hempstead Swim Club went to Norwich this weekend to take part in the ASA East Region Championships and did themselves proud.

Taking on top swimmers from six counties, Frederick Woodcock, aged 11, lead the way with a gold medal and a personal best time of 5.05.17 in the 400m freestyle.  Freddie, who qualified for every event in the championships, went onto score another best time in the 200IM of 2.46.75, picking up a silver medal. He made two further finals and is currently lying in third position on the overall points score in his age group.

For the 12 year-old boys, Louis Mayhew took on a tough field in the 100m backstroke to make the final, finishing in seventh place.  He also competed in three freestyle events over the weekend, making ninth in the 800 metres, fourteenth in the 200, and sixteenth in the 100m.

Danielle Bayliss, aged 12, competed in her favourite 200m backstroke and came home in tenth spot posting a personal best time of 2.42.59.

Devon Prior, 11, took on the hotly contested 200 and 100 metres breaststroke, coming twelfth and fifteenth respectively with two strong swims.

Arthur Woodcock, 11, put in two big personal best times in his 200m freestyle and 200m IM, winning both his heats in the process to come eleventh and fifteenth.

12 year-old Thomas Sherriff’s 100m and 200m freestyle swims proved he is firmly on his way back from the illness that put him out of action for six months.

The championships conclude next weekend with more medals and points still up for grabs.
