125 swimmers from nine clubs came together at Hemel last night with just one objective – to swim one of the hardest races in the swimmers’ repertoire, a 200 fly! Having just one event in a competition is highly unusual but the 200 fly is all too often the ugly duckling event, at best squeezed in at the end of a competition when swimmers are already tired, and with so few entrants the heats are hopelessly unbalanced, and at worst dropped for lack of interest.
Swimmers from Chesham, CoStA, Harpenden, Hemel, Putteridge, Stevenage, Tring, Watford and Wycombe, many of them swimming the event for the first time, enjoyed some really competitive heats and posted some fast times. Congratulations to Harrison Lees of Watford and Adel Zabrzewski of Chesham who were the fastest boy and girl on the night, and to Sam Gaines who smashed an eight year old Hemel Club record at the distance for 15 yr old boys.
