The Hemel team of Mike Pigott, Pam Ware, Adi Monger and Kevin McKenna achieved a magnificent first place in their age group in the 4 x 50 mixed free relay at the British Gas Masters Championships in Leeds over the weekend to become National Champions!
The result crowned an outstanding weekend for the Hemel team which also included Dave Pirrie, Mark Ayres and James Lambert; Other highlights included three second places for the mens relay team of Mike, Dave, Mark and Kevin in the 4 x 100 free, 4 x 50 free and 4 x 50 medley, and a second place for Kevin, Dave, Adi and Pam in the 4 x 50 mixed medley relay.
Despite being the first time most had competed at national level in every singles event they ranked in the top ten for their age group.
James Lambert was the only swimmer to compete in the long distance events swimming PBs in both the 200 and 400 metres freestyle.
Individual medals were won by Pam Ware, bronze, for her individual 50m fly and Kevin McKenna, bronze, for his individual 100 back.
Thanks go to two tired supporters who drove up to Leeds to cheer on the team, we were the only club with a vuvuzela – the team could not have done it without you.
Well done to all swimmers, it just shows the over 30’s have still got what it takes!
Has Hemel ever had National Champions before, does anyone know?
