Representatives of HHSC attended the annual Herts Service to Sports Awards 2012 which took place on 17th December in the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield. The prestigious event was hosted by David Croft, who is now a leading commentator on Sky Sports F1 coverage. Prior to joining Sky, David presented BBC Radio 5 Live’s F1 programmes and also worked on BBC Three Counties Radio and his expertise showed as he presented the various awards, managed the large number of on-stage guests and conducted interviews with the two guest Olympic athletes. Etienne Stott won gold with the Team GB Canoe Slalom and David Clarke competed in the Paralympics GB 5-a-Side Football as team captain with 144 international caps to his name.

HHSC’s own Andrew Farrow, Admin and Membership Secretary and winner of the Dacorum Volunteer of the Year Award in October, was nominated in the Volunteer of the Year (over 21) category, along with 14 other contenders and came third overall in the category. Andrew’s engraved glass trophy will go on display in the club’s trophy cabinet in SportSpace, Hemel Hempstead. Joan Keevill, Club Chair, said: “This is fantastic recognition for one of our hardest and most valued workers – it’s also great for the club. We will definitely be entering more of our volunteers next year, perhaps even the Club of the Year, as it’s our 100th anniversary next year.”

Another worthy winner was Hertfordshire ASA’s Ian Mackenzie, who won a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition for his lasting and significant voluntary contribution to sport in Hertfordshire. Commenting on the award, Ian said: “I didn’t even know until Friday that I’d been nominated, it was a real surprise!”
