The Hemel Hempstead Swimming Club Aquaspace Academy is a joint initiative by Sportspace and HHSC to produce a Swimming Academy that allows swimmers to improve their swimming ability with a view to joining the Swimming Club.
Talented swimmers who are currently in Sportspace Aquaspace Lessons are identified by their swimming teachers and invited by the Head Coach of the Swimming Club to join the Academy.
The Academy is intended to be an alternative pathway into the swimming club, young swimmers develop at different rates and their journey to fulfill their potential is a long one. HHSC works hard to ensure our athletes follow the Long Term Athlete Development guidance set out by the ASA, the Academy ensures we have different ways of developing our young swimmers.
The Academy runs on a Sunday evening at 5.15pm for 45 minutes and is coached by Sportspace Teachers who are also Coaches at the swimming club, this gives swimmers the unique chance to build on their swimming lessons and be taught extra swimming drills to help develop their technique to be ready to join the world of competitive swimming.
Typically swimmers in the Academy are aged 8 to 12 and will join from Stage 5 lessons or higher.
Swimmers in the Academy will remain in their Sportspace lessons making the session additional to their existing lessons, however they will be encouraged to take part in Club Competitions and will be selected to represent the club as appropriate.
