Hemel Hempstead Swimming Club has been shortlisted for the Riverside Community Sports Award in association with the Gazette, giving us the chance to win £1000 but WE NEED YOUR VOTES!
We are one of five finalists, all local sports clubs, two of which will each be awarded the grant of £1000 at the beginning of July to coincide with the Olympic Torch events. The winners will be selected through a public vote between now and June. So tell all your friends and family and get down to Riverside to vote for your club!
Casting your vote is easy: simply visit the shops at Riverside Shopping Centre and ask any of their staff members for a voting token and place your token in the appropriate box provided. The following stores will hold a voting station: Debenhams, Starbucks, Clintons, Laura Ashley, Monsoon, Waterstones, Next and HMV. Voting will close on the 24th June. You can vote as many times as you like.
Our application was supported by generous testimonials from Ian Mackenzie (Chairman, ASA East Region), Sheila Mackenzie (Secretary, Herts ASA), Bill Woodhouse (HHSC Masters swimmer and squad coach) and Tom Sherriff (Regional Squad swimmer and Club Captain). If we’re successful, we plan to use the money to enhance the opportunities for more swimmers to take up competitive swimming from a younger age by setting up a Swim Academy. This will provide progression and a link from ‘learn to swim’ to competitive swimming to enable children to reach their full potential. The Academy has been a goal for the club for a while, but the initial costs of setting it up and running it have been prohibitive. This will give us the opportunity to put our plans into action and start the Olympic dreams of Dacorum’s young swimmers in this Olympic year.
